This tomb holds the remains of seven Catholic martyrs of the Joseon period and is also known as Chimyeongjasan Mountain. During the Catholic persecution of 1801 (the Sinyu Persecution), in the first year of King Sunjo, Yu Hang-geom (Augustine), the apostle of Catholicism in the Honam region, and his wife Sin Hui; his eldest son Yu Jung-cheol (John) and daughter-in-law Yi Sun-i (Lutgarda), well known for their celibate marriage; his second son Yu Mun-cheol (John); his sister-in-law Yi Yuk-hui; and his nephew Yu Ju-seong (Matthew) were all martyred. After the seven martyrs were executed, fellow believers temporarily buried them at Jenam-ri, next to Chonam-ri, Yu Hang-geom's hometown. On 19 April 1914, Father Baudounet of Jeondong Catholic Church in Jeonju and members of the congregation moved their remains to this site. Together with Jeondong Catholic Church, where Yu Hang-geom was executed, and Supjeongi Catholic Church, where his eldest daughter-in-law, the celibate Yi Sun-i (Lutgarda), was martyred, this site is one of Korea's foremost Catholic holy places.
