A kiln site is a place where kilns were used to fire porcelain, roof tiles or other vessels. This site lies in hilly terrain about 1km northwest of Wangneung in Myeongju-gun, midway along the slope running from the foot of the mountain down to the valley below. It is the only kiln site for buncheong ware — a Joseon-period grey stoneware coated with white slip — discovered in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. The Sejong Sillok Jiriji (Geographical Appendix to the Annals of King Sejong) records that 'there is one porcelain kiln near the western side of Bohyeon-chon village.' Most of the recovered buncheong ware and celadon fragments are bowls and dishes, including bowls with a black-inlaid lotus-scroll design, buncheong dishes with a stamped chrysanthemum design, and buncheong bowls with a stamped lotus-petal design, along with a small number of white porcelain fragments. Judging from the patterns on the recovered ceramic fragments, the kiln is generally presumed to date from the first half of the 15th century.
