Jeong Seon Songgye-ri Fortress and Tumuli
정선송계리산성및고분군 · 旌善松溪里山城및古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a fortress built along the ridge in front of Songgye-ri, facing Samcheok, together with the tombs distributed around it. Songgye-ri Fortress occupies a strategically important position with a full view of the Sapdangnyeong and Baekbongnyeong passes, the routes leading from the Gangneung and Donghae areas over to Jeong Seon. The fortress was built in a relatively straight line on the steep eastern slope of the hill, as a naetak-style fortress, a type in which only the outer face is built of stone while the inside is filled with earth and rubble. At the southern end of the wall the hill drops sharply before rising again to form another ridge, along which four tombs are distributed. All have been looted, exposing their stone-lined burial chambers; only the interior of one large tomb could be examined, and its structure was found to be a front-opening stone-lined tomb (hoenggusik seokgwakmyo). The fortress and the tombs are thought to be closely related, but since tombs are also found inside the fortress, the tombs appear to have been built later than the fortress itself. Pottery fragments presumed to date from the Three Kingdoms period have been collected around the fortress and tombs, but this is not sufficient to establish precisely when the fortress was built.
