Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the grave and tomb stele of Seong Un, known by his pen name Daegok (1497–1579), a scholar of the early Joseon period and son of Seong Se-jun, who held the post of bujeong, an assistant directorship in the Joseon bureaucracy. The tomb stele, or myogal, is a small gravestone with its upper part carved into a rounded shape. He passed the lower state examination (samasi) during the reign of King Jungjong, but when his elder brother fell victim to the Eulsa Sahwa, the political purge that broke out in the year King Myeongjong came to the throne (1545), he withdrew to live in seclusion on Songnisan Mountain in Boeun. The court offered him office on several occasions, but he declined every time. Skilled in poetry and prose, he devoted himself solely to scholarship, keeping company with Seo Gyeong-deok, Yi Ji-ham and others. When he died, King Seonjo grieved and sent a eulogy, and later conferred on him the posthumous post of seungji, a royal secretary. As he had no children, his brother-in-law, the magistrate of Gimcheon, Kim Cheon-bu, together with Seo Gyeong-deok, Yi Ji-ham and others, built a shrine and held memorial rites for him. The gravestone standing before the burial mound was erected in 1579, the 12th year of King Seonjo, with its inscription composed by Seong Hon. The tomb stele was made in 1663, the fourth year of King Hyeonjong, with the text composed by Song Si-yeol and the calligraphy written by Song Jun-gil.
