This is an earthen fortress built atop Gutdaesup, a hill 87 metres above sea level in Seogodo-ri, Geumma-myeon, Iksan, in Jeonbuk State. The peak is enclosed by Mireuksan Mountain to the north, Ogeumsan Mountain to the west and Geummasan Mountain to the east. The fortress wall was formed by piling up an earthen rampart on the inside and cutting a moat around the outer perimeter. The fortress has a circumference of 330 metres and a roughly circular plan. The centre of the southern wall projects outward, suggesting that a south gate once stood there, but a grave now occupies the spot, so the original shape can no longer be made out. The exact period of construction is unknown, but roof tiles bearing the inscription 金馬渚, read Geummajeo, along with Baekje-style roof tiles and pottery, have been excavated inside the fortress, suggesting that it was built in the Baekje period. In the Joseon period, it is said that an altar was set up here to hold memorial rites for ownerless, solitary spirits as a way of warding off epidemics. This fortress site is also said to be the place where So Yang-gok, a native of this county, used to ride his horse.
