Yowoljeong Pavilion Garden refers to the woodland surrounding Yowoljeong Pavilion, said to have been built by Kim Gyeong-u, an official of the Board of Works, when he retired from office to live in seclusion during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon (r. 1545–1567). From the pavilion, Ongnyeobong Peak comes into view, along with the Hwangnyonggang River and the open fields beyond. About sixty crape myrtle trees surround the pavilion, and a pine grove nearby makes the scenery even more beautiful in summer. Inside the pavilion hang wooden plaques inscribed with poems by eminent scholars such as Kim In-hu (pen name Haseo) and Gi Dae-seung (pen name Gobong). Among these, a descendant named Kim Gyeong-chan once inscribed a plaque praising the view here as "the finest Hwangnyong in Joseon." When the court summoned him and asked, "If Hwangnyong is the finest in Joseon, how does it compare to Hanyang?", he is said to have replied, "It is the finest under heaven," and so avoided punishment — a story that has been passed down to this day.
