Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Confucian academy honours Yeoheon Jang Hyeon-gwang, together with Dongbong Gwon Geuk-rip, Uheon Jeong Sa-sang, Yunam Son U-nam, and Suam Jeong Sa-jin. Jang Hyeon-gwang (1554–1637) was a civil official and Neo-Confucian scholar of the mid-Joseon period. He devoted his life to scholarship, and although he was recommended for office on several occasions, he had no interest in politics and never took up a post. Ibamseowon Confucian Academy was built in 1657, the eighth year of King Hyojong, and was closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing local Confucian academies. Its shrine was destroyed by fire in 1907 during the Japanese colonial period and was restored in 1913 and again in 1972. The academy grounds contain a shrine and a lecture hall, along with ancillary buildings such as Iljedang and Manhwaldang halls. The shrine houses ancestral tablets, and a memorial rite is held there every February.
