Supjeongi was the site of a military training command post during the Joseon dynasty, and it later became an execution ground where Catholics were beheaded. At the time the area was thickly overgrown with dark woods, so it was called "Sup-meori" or "Supjeongi," both meaning roughly "the head of the grove." During the Sinyu Persecution of 1801, the wife, sister-in-law, and eldest daughter-in-law Yi Sun-i (Lutgarda) of Yu Hang-geom (Augustine), the first Catholic apostle of Jeolla Province, were martyred here. During the Gihae Persecution of 1839, Sin Tae-bo (Peter), Yi Tae-gwon (Peter), Yi Il-eon (Job) and Jeong Tae-bong (Paul) were martyred here. During the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, Gyeong Mun-ho (Bartholomew), Son Seon-ji (Peter), Han Jae-gwon (Joseph), Jo Hwa-seo (Peter) and Yi Myeong-seo (Peter) were martyred here. In 1867, Kim Sa-jip (Philip) and several others were also martyred here. Together with Jeondong Cathedral, built outside Pungnammun Gate where Yu Hang-geom was executed, and Chimyeongjasan Mountain, where Yu Hang-geom and his family are buried, this site is one of Korea's foremost Catholic pilgrimage places.
