Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krLocated in Jangcheon-ri, Seoho-myeon, Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province, Chunghyomun Gate — "the Gate of Loyalty and Filial Piety" — was erected to honour the loyalty and filial devotion of the brothers of General Jeon Mong-seong (1561–1597), who rendered great service during the Japanese invasions of Korea. Jeon Mong-seong passed the military examination in 1583, the sixteenth year of King Seonjo, and held a number of official posts. When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, he won great merit by defeating Japanese forces. During the Jeongyu War of 1597 he raised a righteous army together with his younger brother Mong-jin and others to fight the Japanese, but was killed in action at the battle of Haeampo. His younger brother, General Jeon Mong-tae, passed the military examination in 1603, the thirty-sixth year of King Seonjo, and after holding various offices, rendered great service in suppressing Yi Gwal's Rebellion in 1624, the second year of King Injo. Later, to honour the achievements of these three brothers, Chunghyomun Gate was ordered built in 1887, the twenty-fourth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, and was completed in 1898.
