Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChungnyeolsa Shrine holds the spirit tablets of Hong Myeong-gu and General Yu Rim, who achieved great success at Kimhwa during the Manchu invasion of 1636. It was built in 1650, the first year of King Hyojong, and in 1652, the third year of his reign, was named Chungnyeolsa and granted a signboard inscribed with that name by royal order. According to the Gangwondoji (Gazetteer of Gangwon-do), the shrine was later rebuilt, though the date is unknown; the shrine hall, inner gate, and surrounding wall, which had been damaged during the Korean War, were newly rebuilt in 1998. At Chungnyeolsa stand the memorial stele to Hong Myeong-gu's loyalty and the victory monument to Yu Rim, and in 1997 a protective shelter was built to preserve the inscriptions.
