Namgosa Temple Site
남고사지 · 南固寺址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of Namgoyeonguksa Temple, said to have been founded in 668, the eighth year of King Munmu of Silla, by the monk Myeongdeok. "Yeonguk" means "to bring peace to the nation", a name often given to temples situated in mountain-fortress areas. From the late Joseon period the temple was known as Namgosa, and its monks played a part in guarding Namgosanseong Fortress. The old site of Namgosa Temple is where a building now stands to the front-west of the present Daeungjeon Hall. The current buildings of Namgosa are presumed to have been built roughly 100 years ago, and in 1979 the Daeungjeon Hall and other structures were rebuilt, giving the temple its present form.
