Ulleung Namseo-dong Tumuli
울릉남서동고분군 · 鬱陵南西洞古墳群
Provincial Monument

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of the densely clustered tomb groups found across Ulleungdo Island. The tombs were built by using large stones on a foot slope of the mountain to construct a retaining wall or platform, levelling the ground; on top of this a stone-lined chamber (seokgwakmyo) for the deceased was built, and the whole was then capped with a mound of stone, forming a stone-mound tomb (jeokseokchong). The front of the entrance to the stone-lined chamber (seokgwak) is built as a vertical wall, giving it the appearance of the facade of a shrine — a form found only on Ulleungdo Island during the Three Kingdoms period.
