General Kim Jwa-jin (1889–1930), pen name Baekya, was born in Haengsan-ri, Galsan-myeon, Hongseong-gun, South Chungcheong Province. In October 1920, when a large Japanese army was dispatched to Manchuria to suppress the independence forces, he led his unit, the Korean Independence Army under the Northern Route Military Government, toward Baekdusan Mountain. Encountering Japanese troops at Cheongsanri, he engaged them in battle and won a major victory, killing or wounding some 3,000 Japanese soldiers. This Battle of Cheongsanri stands as the most brilliant achievement in the history of Korea's armed independence movement. On 24 January 1930 he was shot dead by a communist. A public funeral was held for him among Korean expatriates in Manchuria, where he was buried; in 1934 his wife, Madam O Suk-geun, had his remains moved to Iho-ri, Seobuk-myeon, Hongseong-gun, and in 1957 they were reinterred at the present site. Boryeong City has carried out a project to consecrate the burial ground in order to honour the general's achievements and carry forward his spirit of independence. Every year on 22 October, the anniversary of the Battle of Cheongsanri, figures from all walks of life gather at the tomb to hold a memorial ceremony and reflect on his spirit of independence. In 1962 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation of the Republic of Korea.
