Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old site of Naejangsa Temple on Naejangsan Mountain. According to the Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (Newly Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), "Baengnyeonsa Temple is also called Naejangsa and is located on Naejangsan Mountain." It is not known exactly when Baengnyeonsa was founded, but it is said to have been built in 660, the 20th year of King Uija of Baekje, by the monk Yuhae Seonsa. Kim Jeong-hui (Chusa), a renowned calligrapher of the Joseon period, renamed "Baengnyeon" (White Lotus) to "Byeongnyeonsa" (Jade Lotus Temple) and wrote a signboard for it, but this was lost during the Korean War. In 1925 the monk Hakmyeong Seonsa rebuilt the Geungnakbojeon Hall, which enshrined an Amitabha Buddha, and erected monks' quarters and a meditation hall, but these too were lost during the Korean War. At the temple site today stands a pagoda-form stupa of unknown date, and on the rock face behind it are carved the characters for "Seongnanjeong," inscribed by Mongnyeondang Kim Jin-min.
