These are the most densely clustered tombs found anywhere on Ulleungdo Island, with some 40-odd tombs distributed across a gently sloping hillside. Each tomb was built by laying a stone platform and constructing a rectangular stone chamber (seoksil) at its centre; the body was placed inside, and stones were piled over it to form the mound, producing a so-called stone-mound tomb (seokchong). They are thought to date from the Three Kingdoms period. The Ulleung Hyeonpo-dong tombs are stone-mound tombs of a distinctive form found only in the Ulleungdo region, making them important for the study of tombs in this area.
