This is the burial ground of Yu In-seok (1842–1915), pen name Uiam, a proponent of wijeong cheoksa ('upholding orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy') thought and a righteous-army (uibyeong) commander of the late Korean Empire period. He was born in Nam-myeon, Chuncheon, in 1842 (the 8th year of King Heonjong), and at the age of fourteen was adopted by his relative Jung-seon. This brought him into the school of Yi Hang-no, where he studied and learned from Kim Pyeong-muk and Yu Jung-gyo the doctrine of jonhwayangi ('honouring the civilised and repelling the barbarian'). In 1895 (the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong's reign), prompted by the Eulmi Incident and the edict ordering the cutting of topknots, he launched a righteous-army uprising and was highly active, though his forces were eventually scattered by government troop attacks. He later went into exile abroad in 1908, and in June 1910 formed the Sipsamdo Uigun (Righteous Army of the Thirteen Provinces), a unified body of the righteous-army forces in the Maritime Province, where he was chosen as supreme commander. He is regarded as one of the leading righteous-army commanders of the late Korean Empire period, a man who carried the righteous-army movement forward on the practical basis of wijeong cheoksa thought.
