This site is presumed to be the tomb of General Gyebaek, a renowned commander of the late Baekje period counted, together with Seongchung and Heungsu, as one of Baekje's three loyal subjects. In 660, the twentieth year of King Uija, when the allied forces of Silla and Tang advanced on Baekje's strategic points of Tanhyeon and Baekgang River, General Gyebaek led a suicide squad of some 5,000 men against Kim Yu-sin's army of 50,000 at Hwangsanbeol. Before going into battle, he is said to have killed his own wife and children to spare them the shame of becoming enemy slaves. Through the valiant fighting of this squad, resolved to die, they won four engagements, but were finally overwhelmed by superior numbers and met a heroic end. This site is regarded as General Gyebaek's tomb because old records state that his head was cut off at a place called "Suraksan" and that his body was hastily gathered and temporarily buried at "Gajanggok," both of which correspond to this location, and because Chunggok Seowon, which enshrines his memorial tablet, stands directly behind it. The area to the southeast of the tomb is also Hwangsanbeol, the site of the final battle between Baekje and Silla. The tomb area originally lay neglected with its stone-lined burial chamber exposed, and was given its present form only after repair work in the late 1970s.
