Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJeongchungsa is a seowon, a Confucian academy, founded in 1632, the tenth year of King Injo of Joseon, to honour and emulate the loyal spirit of those who gave their lives for the country. In 1657, the eighth year of King Hyojong, it received a plaque bearing the king's own calligraphy and became a sa'aek seowon, an academy granted royal recognition. It was dismantled in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the order abolishing seowon, but was rebuilt in 1964 by local Confucian scholars and has stood to this day. Jeongchungsa holds memorial rites for Song Sang-hyeon, courtesy name Cheon-gok, magistrate of Dongnae, who fought to the death during the Japanese invasions of Korea, together with Sin Ho, posthumously honoured as Mujang-gong, and Kim Jun, posthumously honoured as Jangmu-gong.
