This pavilion was built to honour Song Je, who died in battle during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, Song Deok-il, who died fighting a Jurchen invasion in 1616, the eighth year of King Gwanghaegun, and the fidelity of Song Je's wife, Lady Gu. Song Je was a military official who, in 1593, the twenty-sixth year of King Seonjo, was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during the Japanese invasions. When an enemy commander tried to force him to his knees, he defied him, declaring, "You may cut off my head, but you cannot bend my knee," and was killed for his defiance. The Japanese soldiers, impressed by this, are said to have buried his body and set up a wooden marker inscribed "Here lies Song Je, a righteous man of Joseon." Song Deok-il, known by the pen name Joeun, was a military official of the mid-Joseon period. In 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo, during the Japanese invasions, he served as a cheomjeong, an assistant section chief, of the Hullyeonwon, the Military Training Agency, and accompanied the king on his flight to Uiju. He also distinguished himself in the second Japanese invasion of 1597, and in 1616 he repelled a Jurchen invasion; for capturing the Jurchen leader Bak Su-hui on that occasion he was raised to the court rank of gaseon-daebu. In February 1617 he was recommended for the post of Naval Commander of the Three Provinces.
