Wonju Ungogwoncheonseok Burial Ground
원주운곡원천석묘역 · 原州耘谷元天錫墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Won Cheon-seok, pen name Ungok (1330–unknown). From a young age he was accomplished in scholarship, and together with Yi Saek, pen name Mogeun, and others he played a major part in spreading Neo-Confucianism; he was also a childhood tutor to the future King Taejong of Joseon. When politics grew corrupt at the end of Goryeo, he lamented the state of affairs and withdrew into seclusion on Chiaksan Mountain. When the Joseon Dynasty was founded and he was offered official posts, he held fast to his loyalty to Goryeo and never came out to serve. Within the burial ground, in front of the burial mound stand a gravestone and a sangseok, a stone table for laying out ritual food, while a short distance away stands a sindobi, a memorial stele set up on the approach to the tomb — a modest arrangement overall.
