This is the grave of Bak Yeon (1378–1458), one of the foremost musicians of the Joseon period. His courtesy name was Tanbu, his pen name Nangye, and his posthumous title Munheon. Together with Wang San-ak of Goguryeo and Ureuk of Silla, he is regarded as one of the Three Great Musicians of Korea. He passed the civil service examination in 1411, the eleventh year of King Taejong, and became an editor at Jiphyeonjeon, the Hall of Worthies. After King Sejong's accession he rose to the post of Akhak byeoljwa, an official in charge of musical affairs, and devoted great effort to reorganising the country's music. He submitted memorials on the need to standardise pitch and the importance of compiling musical scores, and had numerous instruments and scores produced; through his work organising the court music of the early Joseon period, he made a major contribution to establishing the state's system of music. A gravestone stands to the right of the burial mound, and to the left stands a mangjuseok, a stone pillar erected so that the grave can be recognised from a distance.
