Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress sits atop a ridge at an altitude of 800 m in Jangsu-eup, Jangsu-gun, in Jeollabuk-do. Lidded Box Miseong is said to have taken its name from soldiers garrisoned there in the Later Baekje period gathering food to eat, and the underground water-channel pipes once used to supply the troops with water survive to this day. The wall measures 970 cheok (320 m) in circumference and is 15 cheok (4.6 m) high on the outer face and 5 cheok (1.6 m) on the inner face. Most of the wall has now collapsed, and only stretches on the north-west and south sides remain relatively intact. This site of the garrison is known today, in a corrupted form of the old name, as Ssugumeori. About 3 km from the fortress stands Sinmusan Mountain, where it is said troops set up scarecrow decoys to draw the enemy away from the fortress and toward Sinmusan, defeating them there instead. The fortress site survives today, and until a few years ago it was said that digging into the ground would still turn up grains of burnt rice.
