Kim Su-on Grave, Yeongdong
영동 김수온 묘소 · 永同 金守溫 墓所

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the grave of Kim Su-on (1409–1481), pen name Goeae, a civil official and scholar of early Joseon. He passed the state examination in 1441, the 23rd year of King Sejong, and by King Sejong's special order became a scholar at the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon), where he compiled the Chipyeong yoram [Essentials for the Governance of Peace]. He later took part in compiling the Uibang yuchwi. In 1466, the 15th year of King Sejo, he rose to the post of Panjungchubusa, and in 1471, the second year of King Seongjong, he was ranked fourth among the merit subjects honoured for aiding the king's succession and was enfeoffed as Lord Yeongsan. He excelled in scholarship and writing, making a name for himself alongside leading contemporary scholars such as Seo Geo-jeong and Seong Sam-mun. He added Korean reading glosses to the Four Books and Five Classics and translated the Myeonghwang gyegam [Admonitory Mirror of Emperor Ming], achieving many accomplishments in translation and publishing. The grave site today centres on a burial mound edged at its base with a ring of stones. In front stand a gravestone, an offering table, and a jangmyeongdeung (a stone lantern set up before a grave), while a pair of civil-official statues and a pair of child-attendant statues stand to either side. In Boeun county there still remains a bujomyo — a shrine where the memorial tablet is kept enshrined rather than buried, so that ancestral rites may continue indefinitely — which King Seongjong established to honour Kim Su-on's achievements forever.
