Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the place where General Kim Jwa-jin, pen name Baekya (1889–1930), lived. Born in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province, he was an independence activist of the late Korean Empire period. After the Eulsa Treaty was signed in 1905 he served as an officer of youth organisations such as the Cheongnyeon Hakwoo Hoe, and in 1913 he joined the Korean Empire Restoration Corps to raise funds, but was arrested and served three years in prison. In 1917 he fled to Manchuria, where he devoted the following thirteen years of his life to the anti-Japanese resistance. In October 1920 he annihilated Japanese forces at the Battle of Cheongsanri, a victory recorded as a towering triumph in the history of the independence struggle. In 1929, together with Jeong Sin, Yi Bung-hae and others, he organised the Korean Federation of Clans (Hanjok Chongyeonhaphoe) and became its chairman, devoting himself to the education and livelihood of Korean compatriots living in Manchuria. While preparing, in alliance with Chinese anti-Japanese forces, to wage war against Japan, he was assassinated by a communist party member in 1930. In 1962 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Founding Merit of the Republic of Korea, and a statue of him stands in front of Hongseong Station. The house has a main hall, a detached men's quarters and a storehouse kept separate, with a stable outside. The main hall is a tile-roofed building eight kan (the traditional bay between pillars) wide and three kan deep, facing west. From the left there is a two-kan kitchen, then a lower room and an upper room of one kan each, and a full-width daecheong, an open wooden-floored hall. Above that is a one-kan room, ending in a narrow wooden veranda. A veranda runs in front of the rooms, and around the end room it is raised by one level to resemble a pavilion. There is a well on one side of the yard, and the stable outside houses a toilet and stalls within a three-kan building. Only the site remained until 1992, when the main hall, gate quarters and men's quarters were restored.
