Hongcheon Hanseonamgungeok Burial Ground
홍천한서남궁억묘역 · 洪川翰西南宮檍墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Namgung Eok (1863–1939). An independence activist, educator and journalist, Namgung Eok was one of the foremost patriots of the Japanese colonial period: he founded the newspaper Hwangseong Sinmun to expose Japan's ambitions of invasion, and roused national spirit through a campaign to promote the mugunghwa, the rose of Sharon and Korea's national flower, and through education in the Korean language and history. His grave is encircled by a round stone border, and in front of the mound stands a table-shaped stone for offerings. To the right of the offering stone is a memorial stele, in front of which stands a pair of mangju stone pillars, and stone steps have been laid at the entrance to the burial ground — all of these were built in 1977.
