Yi Sang-seol Birthplace, Jincheon
진천 이상설 생가 · 鎭川 李相卨 生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of the independence activist Yi Sang-seol (1870–1917). Born in Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, he used the pen name Boje. He studied modern learning together with Yi Si-yeong, Yi Gyu-hyeong and others. After the Eulsa Treaty was signed, he could not contain his outrage, and after delivering a speech in the street he never again left his house. In 1907 he travelled to the Hague in the Netherlands to attend the Hague Peace Conference, carrying a secret letter from Emperor Gojong asserting that Joseon was an independent state, but he failed to achieve his aim. He continued to work for the restoration of his country's sovereignty until his death in 1917 in Yeonhaeju, in the Russian Far East. The house is a thatched building three bays across the front and one bay deep, built of mud bricks and finished with clay. It had collapsed some 40 years ago but has recently been restored and repaired.
