This is the site of Silsangsa Temple, which once stood beneath Cheonwangbong Peak in Inner Byeonsan. Silsangsa was founded in 689, the ninth year of King Sinmun of Unified Silla, by the monk Choui, and is said to have been rebuilt during the Joseon period by Prince Yangnyeong, but it burned down during the Korean War. It was one of the four great temples of Inner Byeonsan. Roof-tile fragments believed to date from the Joseon period are still being excavated from the temple site, and three stone budo remain — round stone stupas in which the sari, or relics, of eminent monks were enshrined. Of the three, two are bell-shaped and in relatively good condition.
