This is the site where the main force of the Joseon central army first fought the vanguard of the Japanese army during the Japanese invasion of 1592, a hallowed site where more than 800 people gave their lives defending the country. In 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, 17,000 troops of the main Japanese force, led by Konishi Yukinaga and armed with matchlock guns, invaded. Before the battle even began, the royal inspector-commander Yi Il abandoned the town and fled. However, the Sangju deputy magistrate Gwon Gil, the local clerk-head Bak Geol, the aides-de-camp Yun Seom, Yi Gyeong-ryu and Bak Ho, the Sageun-do stationmaster Kim Jong-mu, the righteous army commander Kim Jun-sin, and some 800 soldiers swore to fight to the death, and fought on bravely until they fell as heroic spirits defending the country. In recognition of this, King Seonjo granted the whole of Sangju exemption from corvée labour, making it the only region to receive this royal favour. From 1990 a restoration project was carried out, relocating scattered cultural heritage such as Sangsan-gwan and Taepyeongnu to this site and creating a living site for historical education. The spirit tablets of nine people are enshrined at Chungnyeolsa Shrine: the three loyal subjects who died in the Battle of Bukcheon — the aides-de-camp Yun Seom, Bak Ho and Yi Gyeong-ryu — the two righteous men, the righteous army commanders Kim Jun-sin and Kim Il, and the Sangju deputy magistrate Gwon Gil, the clerk-head Bak Geol, the Sageun-do stationmaster Kim Jong-mu, and unnamed patriotic martyrs.
