Ryu Ryang (1355–1416), of the Munhwa clan, assisted in the founding of Joseon and was recorded as a Gaeguk Wonjong Gongsin, a merit subject of the dynasty's founding. He was later ranked fourth class among the Jwamyeong Gongsin, merit subjects honoured for suppressing the rebellion of Yi Bang-gan. The Tomb of Ryu Ryang well reflects the tomb-building customs of the early Joseon period. It consists of two burial mounds, for Ryu Ryang and his wife, Lady Yi of the Yeonan Yi clan, each surrounded by a square stone border. In front of each mound stands a grave marker: Ryu Ryang's has a simplified cloud-shaped top, while his wife's has a rounded top. The stone offering table and incense-stone table are of recent make; the original offering table stands to the west of the grave. Chail stones, used to anchor a sunshade during ancestral rites, are set into either end of the mounds. In front of the mounds stand a stone lantern and a pair of civil-official stone statues, both in the style of the early Joseon period; the lantern is notable for having a square body but an octagonal shaft. The mangju stone pillars were erected in modern times. With its burial mounds, grave markers, stone lantern and stone statues, this is an important tomb that can serve as a benchmark for the study of early Joseon tomb design and stonework.
