Jo Yeong-gyu Memorial Gate, Jangseong
장성 조영규 정려 · 長城 趙英圭 旌閭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis gate was erected to honour the loyalty and integrity of General Jo Yeong-gyu, a military official of early Joseon. Having passed the military examination, he made a name for himself as an incorruptible magistrate in eight districts, including as magistrate of Yongcheon in Pyeongan Province. In 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, while serving as magistrate of Yangsan, the Japanese invasions broke out; he went to Dongnae fortress, and rather than flee the battlefield, which was already surrounded by enemy forces, he fought to the end and died in battle. In 1669, the tenth year of King Hyeonjong, his filial conduct and loyalty became known, and he was honoured with a memorial gate as a loyal subject and posthumously appointed deputy minister of the Board of Taxation. He continues to be enshrined and honoured at the Allak Seowon in Dongnae and the Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Yangsan, among other places.
