This is the birthplace of Jo Ji-hun (1920–1968), a poet and scholar of Korean literature. Born in Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, his birth name was Dong-tak. In the poems of Cheongnokjip, an anthology he published jointly with Park Mok-wol and Park Du-jin, he sang mainly of the currents of national history, of admiration for a world of classical beauty, and of the world of Seon (Zen) Buddhism; his work is valued in the history of Korean poetry for showing a refined perception of nature rooted in Confucian moral thought. The house is divided into a main building and a caretaker's building. The main building is seven bays across the front and seven bays deep, arranged in a square, ㅁ-shaped plan. Its roof is a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof, shaped like the character meaning 'eight' when seen from the side, giving the house the typical appearance of a noble family's residence in the northern Yeongnam region. Carved and painted taegeukgi are set into the main gate and the inner gate, and the house is enclosed by an old-fashioned wall. Built in the style typical of houses in this region, it was constructed by Jo Jeong-hyeong during the reign of King Injo (r. 1623–1649) in the mid-Joseon period; part of it burned down during the Korean War and it was restored in 1963. Besides Jo Ji-hun, this was also the birthplace of Jo Seung-gi, a righteous-army (uibyeong) leader in the closing years of Joseon, and of his grandfather Jo In-seok, among other figures who did great service for the country.
