And Three Ages Spirit-path Stele of Yi Jeong-gu Tomb
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Wolsa Yi Jeong-gu (1564–1635) is regarded as one of the four great literary masters of the mid-Joseon period. His clan seat was Yeonan, and he studied under Yun Geun-su. He rose to the post of Left State Councillor, and was given the posthumous title Munchung. Yi Jeong-gu's tomb is a single mound formed as a joint burial with his wife of the Andong Gwon clan, encircled at its base by a round retaining stone. In front of the mound stand a tomb marker, a spirit seat stone, an offertory table, and an incense-burner stone, flanked left and right by a stone child attendant, civil-official statues, and stone guide posts. Above Yi Jeong-gu's tomb lie the tombs of his son Yi Myeong-han and his grandson Yi Il-sang. At the lower end of the burial ground stand spirit-path steles for Yi Jeong-gu, Yi Myeong-han, and Yi Il-sang, each topped with a roof-shaped capstone and set on a square base. Yi Jeong-gu's spirit-path stele was erected in 1656: the inscription was composed by Kim Sang-heon, the seal-script title was written by Kim Sang-yong, and the main text was written by Yi Gyeong-seok. Yi Myeong-han's stele, erected in 1658, has an inscription composed by Kim Sang-heon and written by Yi Gyeong-seok, with the seal-script title written by Yi Jeong-yeong. Yi Il-sang's stele, erected in 1703, has an inscription composed by Park Se-chae and written by Jo Sang-u, with the seal-script title written by Kim Chang-hyeop.
