Nosanseong Fortress was built on Noseongsan Mountain (419m above sea level), which rises steeply where the Pyeongchang River bends around it. Surrounded on three sides by the river, with a cliff or very steep ground to the north, it occupies a position of great natural strength. The Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (an augmented edition of the Dongguk yeoji seungnam) records it as Nosanseong, stating: 'It was built of stone, 1,364 cheok in circumference and 4 cheok in height. There is a well inside. It is now half in ruins.' The fortress is said to have been built by county magistrate Kim Gwang-bok in the early years of King Seonjo of Joseon, and is known as the site where, during the Japanese invasion of 1592, magistrate Gwon Du-mun led the local people, together with Ji Sa-ham, U Eung-min, Yi In-no and others, in fighting the Japanese forces. The wall is 517m in circumference; although largely collapsed, some well-preserved sections still stand as high as 5.3m. The wall was built everywhere except along the northern cliff: the ground just below the ridge line was cut away and the wall raised on its outer edge, creating a flat inner circuit path running along the wall. This is the same building method used at Daemisanseong Fortress in Hongcheon. Facilities inside the fortress include the site of a well about 2m deep near the summit. Pottery fragments thought to date from the late Goryeo to Joseon periods, and roof-tile fragments thought to be from the Joseon period, have been found within the walls. This suggests the mountain fortress was already built by the Unified Silla period at the latest, and that after passing through Goryeo it was temporarily repaired and used again in Joseon times, around the period of the 1592 invasion. Nosanseong Fortress, built at the latest in the Unified Silla period, has its walls largely collapsed, but it is of great historical value as the site where magistrate Gwon Du-mun led the local people against the Japanese forces during the 1592 invasion.
