This is the tomb of Namyeongun, Yi Gu (?–1822), father of Heungseon Daewongun. Having heard from a geomancer that the site would produce emperors across two generations, the regent Yi Ha-eung (Heungseon Daewongun) moved his father Namyeongun's grave here from its original location in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi province. A temple called Gayasa had stood on the site; it was burned down and its pagoda destroyed before the grave was moved. Seven years after the reburial, a second son, Myeongbok, was born, and he would go on to succeed King Cheoljong, ascending the throne at the age of twelve as Emperor Gojong. In 1866 the German merchant Oppert attempted to rob the tomb but failed; the incident became a pretext for Heungseon Daewongun to tighten his policy of seclusion against the West and to intensify the persecution of Catholics. The tomb sits atop a high hill, and it is said that many roof tiles from the Joseon period have been found in the area around it.
