Seounsanseong Fortress
서운산성 · 瑞雲山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeounsanseong Fortress stands on Seounsan Mountain (539m above sea level), the main peak of the Charyeong Mountains. From the summit there are commanding views in every direction over Anseong, Pyeongtaek, Cheonan and Asan Bay, making it a strategically vital point. The fortress wall connects two peaks at the summit of Seounsan Mountain and encircles the mountainside below. Except for part of the south wall, the walls remain relatively well preserved. The fortress has a circumference of 620m, of which about 450m consists of earthen ramparts. In overall plan it forms an elongated rectangle running east–west. The walls were built by piling up earth along the ridge line; in some sections the natural terrain was left unwalled, or the ground was simply cut back to create a slope. There are gate sites at the north and south, though it appears access was mainly through the south gate. Inside the fortress, General Rock — believed to have served as a command post during battle — along with a well site, a temple site, a stone Buddha, a small cave, and fragments of earthenware and roof tiles have been found. Judging from the construction technique and the excavated relics, Seounsanseong Fortress may have been a Baekje fortress of the Three Kingdoms period, but as no excavation has yet been carried out, the exact builders and date of construction remain unknown. The relics found inside suggest that a fortress built in the Three Kingdoms period may have been repaired and used again during the Imjin War, the Japanese invasions of Korea.
