Usanseong Fortress
우산성 · 牛山城

Usanseong Fortress stands on Useongsan Mountain in Cheongyang-eup, Cheongyang county, South Chungcheong province. Except for a section on the east side, which makes use of the natural terrain, the wall encircling the mountaintop was built entirely of stone. The fortress wall is about 965 m in circumference, and where best preserved it stands about 7 m high and 6 m wide. The points where the south and east walls meet, and where the north and east walls meet, are higher than the rest of the wall, and are thought to have been the sites of command platforms from which a general directed troops in battle. At the south-east and north-east corners, the wall appears to have projected outward in rectangular bastions (chiseong) built to defend the wall face. Gates can be identified on the south-west, south, and north sides; the site of the north gate survives especially well, and the gate appears to have been set back about 2 m from the line of the wall. Within the fortress the remains of several building sites and storage pits have been found, and according to the Sejong sillok jiriji (the Geographical Survey appended to the Veritable Records of King Sejong), there were two wells here. The artefacts recovered from the fortress are mainly fragments of Baekje pottery, with fragments of Goryeo- and Joseon-period roof tiles also found, suggesting that the fortress was built in the Baekje period and remained in use down to the Joseon period.
