Samheung-ri Island Kiln Site, Gangjin
강진 삼흥리 도요지 · 康津三興里陶窯址

A yoji, or kiln site, is the remains of a kiln where porcelain, roof tiles, or other vessels were fired. The Samheung-ri kiln site in Gangjin lies southeast of the Samheung-ri Reservoir, adjacent to the celadon kiln sites of Daegu-myeon. Four early celadon kiln sites dating to the 10th–11th centuries of the Goryeo period, three Goryeo earthenware kiln sites, and three buncheong (grey-blue powder-celadon) kiln sites dating to the 15th–16th centuries of the Joseon period have been found here, suggesting that celadon, earthenware and buncheong ware were all produced at this site over a long span from Goryeo to Joseon. The ceramic fragments excavated here mostly show traces of inlaid line decoration and stamped inlay techniques that developed from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon period. This suggests that, unlike the fine celadon produced at the Daegu-myeon kiln sites, the Samheung-ri kiln site produced lower-quality buncheong ware for use by ordinary people. As a site where ceramics were made continuously from Goryeo through Joseon, Samheung-ri is an important site for tracing the development of Korean ceramics.
