Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a bo (a small check-dam that blocks a stream to irrigate paddies) and its channel, along with a stele of gratitude to Kim Won-bo, raised by local residents in thanks, all dating from a time when drought and flood made life difficult. A bo is created by building an embankment across a paddy field and damming the flowing stream to supply water, while the channel is the passage through which the water travels. At the time, this entire area was suffering enormous damage to its crops from repeated drought and flood, and with no irrigation facilities in place it could not escape a poor harvest year after year. According to tradition, Kim Won-bo, a chamban (Vice Minister), received instructions in a dream from an old man to build a bo, mobilised local residents to install it, and built up a stone embankment to form the channel. Afterwards, the residents, who came to enjoy a settled life, raised a stele of gratitude on the bank above the channel in memory of Kim Won-bo's kindness. The stele is a simple rectangular shape, with both upper corners cut off at a slant. The bo and channel were built in 1736, the twelfth year of King Yeongjo.
