An Tan-dae Tomb
안탄대선생묘 · 安坦大先生墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of An Tan-dae, the maternal great-grandfather of King Seonjo of Joseon. His daughter was Lady An, later honoured as Changbin, a royal concubine of King Jungjong. Lady Changbin was the birth mother of Grand Prince Yeongyang and Grand Prince Deokheung, and since Grand Prince Deokheung was the birth father of King Seonjo, An Tan-dae can be identified as King Seonjo's maternal great-grandfather. Although he effectively held the position of Buwongun, the title given to the father of a queen, he declined the wealth and honour that came with it and lived a frugal life; after his death he was posthumously granted the post of State Councillor of the Right. The tomb is a joint burial with his wife, Lady Hwang. In front of the burial mound stand a tombstone, an offering table and an incense-stone, flanked on either side by a pair of stone pillars, which mark a grave visible from afar, and a pair of civil-official statues. The tombstone inscription was composed in 1656, the seventh year of King Hyojong, by Sin Choe, a descendant through the female line, with calligraphy by Sin Seung.
