Jincheon Daemosanseong Fortress
진천대모산성 · 鎭川大母山城

Daemosanseong Fortress, in Jincheon-eup, Jincheon County, North Chungcheong Province, is also known as Halmiseong ("Grandmother Fortress") and is thought to be the Mosanseong mentioned in accounts of battles in the Samguk sagi. Built on a low hill overlooking a broad plain to the south, it is a valley-enclosing (pogok-sik) mountain fortress with an unusual configuration comprising an inner wall, an outer wall and a subsidiary fortress. The total length of the walls reaches 1,260m, with what appear to be gate sites at the south and north. The inner wall was built by making full use of the natural terrain and tamping earth down in layers, while the outer wall was constructed by laying gravel at the base and filling in with clay-rich soil. The outside of the fortress has steep terrain, while the inside slopes relatively gently. Stone tools and earthenware fragments dating from prehistoric times onward have been found inside the fortress, and outside it, recent surveys have uncovered an early Baekje storage pit, an even older burial site, and a Silla stone-chamber tomb. This fortress was extensively rebuilt in the early Goryeo period by Im Hui, a powerful local clan leader in the Jincheon area, giving it its present form, and it provides important material for the study of administrative districts and mountain fortresses in ancient society.
