Sin Seok-jeong Historic House
신석정고택 · 辛錫正故宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is where Sin Seok-jeong (1907–1974), a giant of the Korean poetry world, lived. Born in Buan, North Jeolla Province, he made his literary debut at the age of seventeen by publishing the poem 'The Setting Sun' in the Joseon Ilbo. In 1931 he began writing in earnest, publishing the poem 'A Gift' in the journal Simunhak. He grew into a giant of the literary world, blending Western Romantic poetry with a Korean sensibility to such a degree that he is called the first modernist poet of the 1930s. Under the oppression of Japanese colonial rule, when the nation had been stripped of its sovereignty, Sin Seok-jeong sustained a tenacious poetic spirit that served as a seedbed for the nation's spirit. His works include the poetry collections Chotbul (Candlelight) and Seulpeun Mokga (Sad Pastoral). The house originally had three kan of thatched rooms — kan being a traditional unit for the size of a house — but it has since been repaired and now has four kan. Though the poet was not born in this house, he retired here after 1931 and devoted himself to writing poetry, living here until he moved to Jeonju in 1952. He carried on vigorous literary activity here, and at the time many townspeople were frequent visitors to the house.
