갈암종택 · 葛菴宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of Garam Yi Hyeon-il (1627–1704), a civil official and Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period. He served as Minister of Personnel under King Sukjong of Joseon and, as a leading figure of the Yeongnam School, inherited the scholarly tradition of Toegye Yi Hwang and upheld the theory of the "mutual issuance of i and gi". He was impeached by the Seoin (Westerners) faction and was exiled. His writings include the Galamjip and the Hongbeom Yeonui. The house follows the traditional square, "ㅁ"-shaped layout typical of the northern Gyeongsangbuk-do region. Yi Hyeon-il was originally born and raised in Illyang-ri, Changsu-myeon, Yeongdeok, but moved to Byeongok-ri, Ipam-myeon, Yeongyang, in the year he turned forty. His tenth-generation descendant moved to Gwangdeok-ri, Jinbo-myeon, Cheongsong, and built the head house there in 1910, but it was later relocated to its present site at Illyang-ri, Changsu-myeon, because of the construction of Imha Dam. The site was also used as a base for the anti-Japanese national salvation movement by Yi Su-ak, Yi Hyeon-il's eleventh-generation descendant, who served as commander-in-chief of the righteous armies of the northern Yeongnam region. The house holds a large collection of literary anthologies and books, and the family is one of the most distinguished representing Yeongnam Confucian scholarship.
