Haenam Bangsallijanggobong Peak Ancient Tomb
해남방산리장고봉고분 · 海南方山里장고봉古墳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a tomb standing to the east of a mountain fortress that encircles the summit of Seongmasan Mountain in Bangsan-ri. The burial mound is as massive as a natural hill, taking a square-fronted, round-backed shape (jeonbang-hugwon), the form associated with the keyhole-shaped tombs of ancient Japan. On the hilly plain north of the fortress stands a pyramid-shaped tomb, its mound surface densely studded with irregular fieldstones. To the south, a stone-chamber tomb lies exposed, and together with the six tombs of Yongil-ri, the seven Yeongol tombs of Bangsan-ri, and the two tombs of Doksuribong Peak in Bangsan-ri, the area around the fortress can be seen to form an extensive burial ground. This tomb has not yet undergone formal academic investigation, so its precise character remains unknown. If the Haenam Bangsallijanggobong Peak Ancient Tomb is confirmed through scholarly investigation to be a keyhole-shaped tomb, it will provide important material for understanding and explaining the burial culture of the Yeongsangang River basin.
