Baek Cheon-jang Tomb
백천장선생묘 · 白天藏先生墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaek Cheon-jang (白天藏, dates of birth and death unknown) was a civil official of the Goryeo dynasty whose clan seat was Suwon. He was appointed pyeongjangsa, a senior state councillor, and was enfeoffed as Lord of Suwon, after which Suwon became a sapaejiji (賜牌之地), land granted by the king, to the Baek clan. In the Joseon period, when Hyeollyungwon, the tomb of Crown Prince Sado, was moved to Hwasan, all tombs within a 10-li radius were ordered to be relocated, but his tomb is said to have been protected by the court and left undisturbed. The tomb precinct of Baek Cheon-jang was recently restored, and a variety of stone furnishings were newly carved and arranged, so that the funerary style of the late Goryeo period can no longer be seen there. The only old stone furnishings remaining are a tombstone, a stone lantern, and a pair of small civil-official statues. The tombstone was erected in 1813 by his seventeenth-generation descendant Baek Hong-su. The stone lantern and the small civil-official statues date from the early Joseon period.
