Bagyakjae Hall, Jecheon
제천 박약재 · 堤川 博約齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was erected by the Jinju Gang clan for the education of their children. Built in the mid-Joseon period, it was the place where Gang Yu, pen-named Sanggok, who submitted a memorial urging resistance to peace negotiations during the Jeongmyo War in the reign of King Hyojong, studied. It measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, and its roof is a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof, which resembles the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. At the centre is a daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, with two rooms arranged to the left and one room to the right. The name board was written by Yu In-seok, a celebrated Confucian scholar and righteous-army leader of the late Joseon period.
