Buyeo Guaribaekje Site

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Baekje-period site yielded a roof-tile fragment inscribed with the characters for "Heavenly King," leading to its identification as the presumed location of a temple called Cheonwangsa. Excavation uncovered two Baekje-period wells arranged on a north–south axis. The northern well is built of stone, square in plan and 270cm deep; about 70cm below its rim, a square channel in its south wall connects to the southern well. The southern well, 360cm away, is likewise square in plan and 270cm deep. From the top down to a depth of 90cm it is built of four tiers of timber boards assembled in the shape of the character for "well," with stone construction below; it too has a channel linking it to the northern well. Large quantities of roof tiles, earthenware, round eave-end tiles, timber and other everyday implements found nearby suggest that a building once stood in the vicinity. This was the first investigation of a Baekje-period well site in Korea, and the systematic clarification of the wells' structure provides important material for studying the layout of everyday-life sites of the period.
