Standing at the centre of the Naju Plain, which stretches along the Yeongsangang River basin, this fortress is a mountaintop fortress encircling the summit of a low hill known as "Jatmi." The name Jamisanseong combines the native Korean word "jat," meaning fortress, with "me/moe/mi," meaning mountain, so that it means "the mountain bearing a fortress." The fortress is small, with a circumference of about 740m, built by piling earth along a saddle-shaped ridge and then reinforcing it with stone. Inside, a flat building site and a spring called Yowangcheon have been identified, along with three gate sites of unknown scale. Nearby lie the Daean-ri Tomb Cluster, the Deoksan-ri Tomb Cluster and the Sinchon-ri Tomb Cluster, all designated historic sites, suggesting that the fortress served as the base of the region's dominant power. Within the fortress, alongside Baekje earthenware fragments, numerous roof-tile fragments from the Goryeo and Joseon periods have also been found, showing that it continued in use as a fortress down to the Joseon period.
