Hoewonhyeon Fortress Site, Changwon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a mountain fortress enclosing a valley in the low hills on the southern foot of Muhaksan Mountain in Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do. From the site, Masan Bay can be seen in full to the south-west, while the plains of Changwon spread out to the north-east. Local residents call it 'Jasansanseong', but it was in fact the site of the government office of the former Hoewon-hyeon county, a place of long standing that served both administrative and military purposes. The fortress wall runs along the ridge of the hill, 4.3 m wide and 1.7 m high. It was built mainly of pounded earth, with the inner and outer faces finished in stone. Of the gates, only the northern one survives: a square opening was cut into the wall, with posts set up inside to hang the door. All the excavated artefacts are fragments of roof tiles, believed to date from the Goryeo period at the latest.
