Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYi Deok-hyeong (pen name Haneum, 1561–1613) accompanied the king in his flight to Uiju during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, and having been despatched to Ming China as a cheongwonsa [special envoy sent to request reinforcements], he succeeded in securing the despatch of Ming troops. During the reign of King Gwanghaegun, when the Three Offices (Samsa), incited by Yi I-cheom, raised the case for executing Grand Prince Yeongchang and deposing the queen mother, Yi Deok-hyeong, together with Yi Hang-bok, strongly opposed this. The Three Offices then united in slandering him and demanding his execution, but King Gwanghaegun settled the matter by stripping him of office. Yi Deok-hyeong's tomb is a single mound shared with his wife, Lady Hansan Yi. Before the mound stand, in order, a grave marker in the won-su-bang-bu form [a round-topped stone on a square base], a spirit seat stone, a stone figure and an incense-burner stone, flanked on either side by child stone figures, civil-official stone figures and stone pillars (mangjuseok). At the entrance to the burial ground stands a spirit-path stele in the isu-bang-bu form [a stele head carved with a dragon, on a square base]; its epitaph was composed by Jo Gyeong, its text written by his great-grandson-in-law Oh Si-bok, and its seal-script title inscribed by his great-grandson-in-law Jeong Gyu-sang. The date of erection is carved on the side of the stele but is now too worn to read. However, since Oh Si-bok, who wrote the text, is recorded there as holding the post of Minister of Personnel with the rank designation 'haeng' [indicating his actual post ranked below his official grade], it can be inferred that the stele was erected between 1692 and 1693, the period during which he held that post.
