This is a private medical institution established in 1602, the thirty-fifth year of King Seonjo, by Kim Gak, Seong Nam and Yi Jun, to independently combat disease in the aftermath of the Japanese invasions of Korea. The name Jonaewon is said to derive from the phrase "jonsim aemul" (cherishing the mind, caring for all things) of the Song-dynasty Chinese scholar Master Cheng. At a time when medical facilities were extremely scarce, Jonaewon was equipped with abundant medicinal supplies and facilities, and treated local residents and the poor, earning it great renown even in other regions. In particular, alongside its medical activities it also held various events to foster harmony among local people, and it is especially notable that from 1607 to 1894 it held a feast for the elderly called the Baeksuhoe (Grey-Head Gathering).
